Blanket Yarn Fedora -free crochet pattern-

I got a really great deal on this Bernat Blanket Yarn, so I stocked up on a few balls.  I made several beautiful pillows, and had one ball left.  I had so much fun with this yarn that I felt like trying to make something different.  That's where the pattern for my Fast Blanket Mittens came from.

I still had quite a bit of yarn left and decided to make a hat.  The Blanket Yarn is very soft, but holds its shape very well, so the fedora came to mind!  I've attempted many fedoras in the past, and they only work with a stiff or thick yarn to keep the shape of the brim and the puckering at the top.  Not only was this hat fun, it was very quick to work up!  Enjoy :)

Rnd 23: -Working backwards, using a RSC (reverse single crochet) or also known as CRAB st- rsc in each st around. (79sts), sl st in 1st st to join. Fasten off!

Note: Instead of Crab (Rsc st) you could also loosely sl st around edge.  I use the crab st, because I love the look and it gives a nice finished edge.

Band: I used scrap yarn that I had laying around, I believe it was a sport weight baby yarn.  But you can use any yarn, or just use a ribbon if you'd like.  I made a chain long enough to go around the hat, plus a bit more to have some overlap for a button.  Then I made one row of sc sts, next row was dc sts, and last row sc sts again.  The center dc row was used as a button hole row.

  1. I was halfway through making a similar fedora in a similar weight yarn when I found your post on ravelry! I consulted your pattern for the brim, and I actually sewed the button on the hat itself. It's a method I use for many hats, because that way I can make different accessories with a buttonhole at the back and put them on all my hats interchangeably.
